Today, students will be introduced to the Human Genome Project and Genetic Biotechnology. Students will look at finding out if genes can be specifically identified and or changed. They will look at what purposes would identifying and manipulating genes serve? Finally they will look at the ethicals of genes: should we identify or manipulate genes: looking at the benefits and the risks. We will have a short PowerPoint presentation and then the students will be given a research project to do for homework.
Objectives:
Students will investigate the purposes of identifying and manipulating genes
Students will look at the ethics behind gene manipulation, benefits and risks

Research Assignment
Computers if necessary
Opening: To begin, I will show the students a picture of a Zedonk that lives on the animal farm on Block Island and ask if they have seen this animal before. They will all raise their hands. I will ask them why they think I brought this photo of cindy. I will tell them that she is a mix between a zebra and a donkey and that they bred her for those very intents and purposes. I will ask if there are other combinations like zebra and donkey that they know of that exist. We will discuss a few examples then I will get into my lesson about the Human Genome Project and Biotechnology.
Learning Activities:
Using a powerpoint we will discuss the Human Genome Project and I will introduce biotechnology and why we would want to map or modify genes to tie up the end of our unit. (20 mins).
Then I will hand out their research assignment and go over it with the class. Students are to pick a topic involving biotechnology and either medicine, agriculture or identification and I want them to answering four of the following questions based on which they pick: this is worth a test grade (25 points each, no length specification but probably 2 to 3 pages, just need to answer each question clearly and completely and cite sources used. Ill give them a list of useful websites to use. Use heading and write information underneath for each question.
How and why is DNA identified or modified in this process?
What purpose does the process serve?
Who benefits from the process?
What are some of the risks?
We will brainstorm together some ideas of the types of topics people might want to research and I will list on the board. This will be due the following Wednesday to ensure plenty of time (6 days) with exam being day after this lesson.
Then I will allow them to use the rest of the class period to review for tomorrow's essay exam. We will write main topics on board from the unit and discuss any questions they might have.
Closing: They will have their exam tomorrow so this research assigment will be due after the weekend, wednesday. I will remind them that there will be one question from each class on the exam and that they should study in order to get a good grade. I will ask if there are any questions and let them be on their way.
